If you have a question you would like answered by a field hockey official please e-mail gr8call@cox.net. Answers will be posted on this page!!

Questions and Answers from Coaches, Players and Fans to Officials:
Q1) What is the ruling if a raised ball, on net, gets caught in the top of the goalie's leg guard?
A1) “Actually, the penalty for a ball lodged in the pads of a GK is a penalty corner. (pg 42 Rule 8-1-s. Penalties: #3 pg 43.) While it seems unfair for that particular foul to stop a goal, it is the correct penalty. I looked back to see when it changed from a bully, if you can imagine THAT. It changed from a bully to a PC in the 2002-3 rules book. I don’t believe it has ever been a PS. To call a PS, there would have to be clear intent to place the ball in her pads. I would not call a PS for the GK directing the ball down and having it land in her pads. Basically, she played the ball legally, and then it was taken out of play by virtue of her equipment. If the ball lodges in a field player’s or official’s clothing, the penalty is still a bully.”
